Artist's Description
This photo has sold a number of times at Art Gallery and Fine Art America. It is the marquee for the first Original Nathans. Nathans Original is located on Stillwell Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. I remember the excitement I had as a child waiting on line to get the tasty hot dogs and delicious french fries. My husband, who grew up in New Jersey, had little understanding of the Nathan's experience. When confronted with the long line, he refused to wait. The most I could do was take this photograph and remember.
About Madeline Ellis
At 12 yrs. old I was fascinated by this little box called a camera. If you pressed the button and brought the negatives to a drugstore, one week later photos would be returned in its' place. I didn't understand this magic. When I was old enough, I studied photography at Brooklyn College. I found that if I put my negatives in a thing called an enlarger a shadow would appear on photo paper. When I dropped that paper in some chemicals, a picture would emerge. Wow! I was hooked and so I studied at the International Center Of Photography. Now, I take a photo, plug my camera into my computer and the photo I just took pops up on my screen. Times have changed. The newer in on the boardwalk was not busy last week when I was there. But I don't eat hot dogs at 10 am!

Excellent, highly graphic image of an iconic sign. Beautiful color and lighting throughout. v/f
Madeline Ellis replied:
Thanks Frank! Wouldn't be nice to have one of those dogs and fries right now? I wonder how many people are standing on that line as I write this.

Jeff, I am glad this photo stirred Brooklyn memories. The taste of the dogs and fries still lingers for me. Mustard please!

I love lots of fond memories growing up in Brooklyn. Going to Nathan's is one of them. Thanks for your recent comment.

I see we have similar tastes in subject matter. I have a shot of this very same sign in my Coney Island collection. Astroland is gone but Luna Park is now the big one, just reopened this year and the Wonder Wheel and the Cyclone are safe for now. Coolshot by the way :-) Cheers, Chris

Madeline, I like all your photographs so much I can't seem to pick just one as a favorite. But just for the fun of it, I will pick this one. Thank you so much for your comment. That would have pleased my Dad for you to say that. He always wanted me to try painting. I finally did when I retired (early) from teaching. I will be coming back to YOUR site often. Very delightful! aew
